On Being a Therapist has become a classic book in the mental health field that has served as a sounding board for the unique frustrations and fulfillments of therapists. In its revised 3rd edition, Jeffrey Kottler includes discussion about how the business and practice of therapy has changed in recent years. This discussion includes specifics on the effects of technology and managed care, the breakdown of theoretical orientation, and the greater client diversity represented in contemporary practice. Additionally, such sensitive topics as how “the destructive energy emanating from a patient pollutes the spirit of the healer,” and how “the power and influence of the therapist’s personality (serves) as a facilitator of growth” are revisited with renewed refinement.
